Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin

Prev Next

Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin became Australia’s first Snowboard World Champion after taking out the Snowboard Cross event at the FIS World Titles at La Molina, Spain in January 2011. In March he added a historic World Cup title to this in the Border-X competition in Switzerland making him the World Champion and World Cup holder for the 2010/11 Season.

Chumpy, who had stood on the podium in four of the previous five World Cup events of the season, edged out a reigning Olympic champion Seth Wescott to take Gold.

The victory came on the back of 2010 World Cup season that saw him finish ranked as world number two. He lit up the first and second rounds of qualifying at the Vancouver Olympics; eventually going down in the preliminary head to head final round, and crashing out of Olympic gold contention.

The Vancouver result though provided the impetus for his end of season success and springboard into taking the mantle as the best in his sport.

Hailing from the Victorian High Country town of Mansfield, Chumpy began skiing with his parents (who own and run a ski shop in Mansfield) at the age of three and took up snowboarding at age eight.

He began competing in his first year of snowboarding and dominated all snowboarding disciplines in his age division during his school years. At 14, he began his travels to the northern winter for further competition and training. A year later, he won the Australian National Championships and progressed to make his World Cup debut in Furano, Japan, in early 2007. From here, he has made the rise to success.

Outside of snowboarding, Chumpy is an accomplished surfer, spending his off season carving any wave he can find. Away from the ‘boards’, he is an avid musician and part of band ‘Love Charli’ (www.lovecharli.com). Having taken up guitar at the same age as he began snowboarding, the trio have produced two CD’s and played in many surf towns and music festivals. Pullin even played a solo gig for at the 2010 FIS Snowboard World Championships in Arosa, Switzerland.

Chumpy is an athlete of the new generation, highly skilled in the world of social media and technology. He has created and maintains his website (www.alexchumpypullin.com), and produces artistic and entertaining ‘movie’ blogs about his current activities.

Marketable, good looking, intelligent, tech savvy and successful. Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin is very much the modern athlete. The likes of Globe and Bolle have tapped into this mix with success, and The North Face, Suzuki and 2XU have partnered with Chumpy in his quest for Olympic Gold.
