Recognised as a credible and knowledgeable football broadcaster, in 2000 Garry was awarded “Outstanding Performer of the Year” by the Australian Football Media Association, an amazing feat for a relative new comer. The following year Garry was awarded “Special Comments of the Year” and in 2010 he confirmed his standing as one of football’s most respected experts when he was awarded the Alf Brown Award for his excellence in the football media in addition to winning the best print columnist category.

Garry continues to receive acclaim for his role on the Nine Network’s AFL Coverage. As a co-host of The Footy Show along with James Brayshaw, the program continues to set the benchmark in AFL entertainment programming.

In 2007, Lyon also became host of the Monday night analysis program Footy Classified on Nine, as the game’s icons go under the microscope this program continues to receive praise from all involved in the game for its hard-hitting format.

His versatility in the media was showcased as a co-host of the morning session of Nine’s coverage of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games and continued on the Network’s coverage of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

On radio, his media portfolio was strengthened with his involvement in Melbourne’s first dedicated 24-hour Sports Radio station – SEN 1116. Lyon played a major role in the formative stages of the Sports Entertainment Network as one of the station’s key personalities as a host on weekday breakfast program Morning Glory.

After a stint with Melbourne’s premier AM station, 3AW, his excellent live radio skills are now a feature of Triple M’s awarding winning AFL coverage. Currently, Lyon continues to call Friday night and Saturday afternoon matches alongside a team that boasts a wealth of experience and character. The Friday Night and Saturday Rub, the station’s entertaining and light hearted pre-game featuring Lyon, is a must listen.

Not limiting himself to television and radio, Garry and old school friend Felice Arena have co-written seven instalments of the Specky Magee series, with the book about the aspiring football star winning several awards. Hugely popular among young readers, an eighth edition of Specky Magee was released in 2011. Garry also continues to write insightful articles for The Age, where he also wrote throughout his playing days.

Prior to his now decade-long career in the media, Lyon was one of the AFL’s stars of the late 80′s/early 90′s with Melbourne. Recruited from Kyabram, Lyon imposed himself on the game as a key forward or defender and was a regular Victorian representative. Lyon was selected as an All-Australian on five occasions, retired in 1998 and was named in the Club’s Team of The Century in 2000.

Despite a glorious playing career with Melbourne, Garry transcends club loyalties and appeals to both male and female demographics across a wide range of ages.

A father of three, Garry embarked on a new football journey in 2010 joining the AFL in a Game Development role. As part of it, Lyon was involved with the AIS-AFL Academy and coached the Vic Country side at the 2010 NAB AFL Under 16 Championships. It added to Lyon’s coaching experience, having been at the helm of the Australian team for the International Rules series against Ireland

Lyon has been an ambassador with NAB for the past decade, coinciding with their involvement as a key AFL partner. The role has seen Lyon involved in a range of activities from executive to grassroots level across the company’s football, community and charity partnerships.
